I think I overwatered. What now?
Overwatering kills more houseplants than neglect. Here’s the recovery playbook.
Overwatering suffocates roots. Symptoms: yellowing, drooping while soil is wet, mushy stems, a rotten smell. The earlier you catch it, the better the odds.
Work through these.
- 01
Stage 1 — caught early
Wet soil, slight drooping, no rot smell yet.
FixStop watering. Move to bright light so soil dries faster. Do not water again until the top 3 cm are dry. Skip one full watering cycle.
- 02
Stage 2 — yellowing leaves
Lower leaves turning yellow, stems still firm.
FixAs above, plus remove yellow leaves. Check drainage hole is open. If the pot has no drainage, repot immediately into one that does.
- 03
Stage 3 — root rot
Rotten smell, black or mushy stems, leaves falling off.
FixUnpot. Rinse roots gently. Cut all black/mushy roots with sterile scissors. Repot in fresh, dry, well-draining mix. Do not water for a week. Hold your breath.
- 04
Stage 4 — too late
Stem is mushy up to the leaves, plant topples when lifted.
FixSalvage what you can. Take a healthy cutting (any green section without rot), let it callus, and propagate. The main plant is gone.
