Helianthus nuttallii, or Nuttall's sunflower, is a species of sunflower native to northern, central, and western North America, from Newfoundland west to British Columbia, south to Missouri, New Mexico, and California.Helianthus nuttallii is a herbaceous perennial plant growing to 50–400 cm (20-160 inches) tall. The leaves are opposite on the lower part of the stem, alternate higher up, narrow lanceolate, 8–20 cm (3.2-8.0 inches) long and 6–30 mm wide, with a rough texture. The flowers are yellow, produced in a flowerhead approximately 9 cm (3.6 inches) diameter with 10–20 ray florets and at least 60 disc florets; each stem bears one to a few flowerheads.Subspecies of Helianthus nuttallii include: Helianthus nuttallii subsp. nuttallii - Canada, western United States. H. nuttallii subsp. nuttallii is considered by some to be a synonym for H. nuttallii. However, others argue that it is distinct from the species. Helianthus nuttallii subsp. parishii (A.Gray) Heiser - (Los Angeles sunflower). Southern California, endemic. The subspecies is presumed to be extinct since 1937. Helianthus nuttallii subsp. rydbergii (Britton) R. Long. - Central Canada, interior northwestern United States

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Helianthus Nuttallii.

Light

Nuttall's sunflower is a sun-loving, perennial herbaceous plant native to open habitats and commonly found in meadows and grasslands. It prefers full sun but can also tolerate partial sun.

Water

Nuttall's sunflower is well-suited for prairie conditions, featuring a deep root system that enhances its drought tolerance. While it requires weekly watering, it thrives best with balanced moisture, so it's important to avoid over-saturation. As an outdoor plant, Nuttall's sunflower benefits from natural rainfall, which supports its growth cycle.

Temperature

Nuttall's sunflower can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, but its distribution may still be restricted by different combinations of moisture and heat. It grows best in warm summers with sufficient rainfall or watering. Extended periods of cloudy, rainy weather, as well as prolonged high temperatures, can raise the likelihood of Nuttall's sunflower dying. In winter, protecting the plant from cold can improve its survival rate.

Fertilizer

The best time to fertilize a Nuttall's sunflower is in early spring, as it comes out of dormancy and starts active growth. Fertilization supplies the essential nutrients needed for healthy development. Although Nuttall's sunflower has fairly low fertilizer requirements, an annual application can improve its survival and encourage better, longer-lasting blooms.

Pruning

The perennial Nuttall's sunflower boasts tall, vibrant blossoms. Prune these plants from early to late spring to encourage growth, remove any damaged stems, and thin out overcrowded areas to improve light access. Regular pruning helps maintain the plant's shape and vigor, ensuring a healthy and attractive display throughout the growing season.
