ON THIS PLANT

Viola jooi, the Carpathian violet or Transylvanian violet, is a species of flowering plant in the family Violaceae, native to Romania and Ukraine. It is a relict species of calcicolous rock outcrops.

A note from PlantMom

Transylvania violet is relatively resistant to disease and usually not likely to suffer from illnesses. Still, it can be vulnerable to pests and diseases present in its environment. Such infections tend to be mild. Regarding care, the plant needs a moderate level of maintenance. It should be pruned regularly to preserve a good appearance and support healthy growth. Fertilizing can also encourage flowering. Transylvania violet is well suited for anyone with outdoor space, like a garden or patio, and does not demand extensive care experience. It may need more attention when grown indoors.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Viola Jooi.

Light

The Transylvania violet naturally grows in places like forest understories and rocky sites, where it receives natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can tolerate full sun or full shade, showing that it is adaptable and hardy.

Temperature

Transylvania violet can tolerate a broad range of temperatures, but its distribution may still be restricted by different combinations of moisture and heat. It grows best in warm summer conditions with sufficient rainfall or watering. Extended periods of cloudy, rainy weather, as well as prolonged high temperatures, can raise the chance of Transylvania violet dying. In winter, adequate protection from cold can increase the plant’s survival rate.

Fertilizer

The best time to fertilize a Transylvania violet is in early spring, as it emerges from dormancy and starts active growth. Fertilization delivers essential nutrients for healthy development. Although Transylvania violets have fairly low fertilizer requirements, applying fertilizer annually can boost their survival and encourage better, longer-lasting blooms.
