ON THIS PLANT

Tetraneuris herbacea is a rare species of flowering plant in the aster family known by the common names eastern fournerved daisy, lakeside daisy, fournerved starflower, and Manitoulin gold. It is native to and endemic to the Great Lakes region in North America, where it is present in Ontario, Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois. It is threatened by habitat destruction and degradation by several forces, including limestone quarrying, recreational activity, fire suppression, and construction. It is a federally listed threatened species of the United States and of Canada.

A note from PlantMom

Eastern fournerved daisy has strong disease resistance and is generally not prone to illnesses. However, it can be affected by pests and diseases present in its surroundings. These infections are typically not severe. For care, this plant requires moderate maintenance. It should be pruned regularly to keep a neat appearance and support healthy growth. Fertilizing can also encourage flowering. Eastern fournerved daisy is a good choice for anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or patio, and does not demand extensive gardening experience. It may need more attention if grown indoors.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Tetraneuris Herbacea.

Light

Eastern fournerved daisy is a sun-loving, perennial herbaceous plant native to open habitats and frequently found in meadows and grasslands. It prefers full sun but can also tolerate partial sun.

Temperature

Eastern fournerved daisy can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, though its distribution may be restricted by specific combinations of moisture and heat. It does best in warm summer conditions with sufficient rainfall or watering. Long periods of cloudy, rainy weather or prolonged high temperatures increase the risk of the daisy dying. In winter, proper protection from cold can improve its chances of survival.

Fertilizer

The best time to fertilize an Eastern fournerved daisy is in early spring, as it comes out of dormancy and begins active growth. Fertilization supplies essential nutrients for healthy growth. Although the Eastern fournerved daisy has relatively low fertilizer requirements, applying fertilizer annually can improve its survival and encourage better, longer-lasting flowers.

Pruning

The Eastern fou-nerved daisy is known for its vibrant yellow blooms and excellent drought tolerance. Pruning in early spring is important as it removes dead stems, prevents overcrowding, and encourages healthy growth, which in turn enhances flowering. Regular pruning also helps maintain the plant's shape and visual appeal. Be sure to use clean, sharp tools to minimize damage and reduce the risk of disease.
