Claytonia virginica, the Virginia springbeauty, eastern spring beauty, grass-flower or fairy spud, is an herbaceous perennial plant in the family Montiaceae. Its native range is eastern North America. Its scientific name honors Colonial Virginian botanist John Clayton (1694–1773).

THE NAME

The Virginia springbeauty is a delicate and cherished native wildflower found throughout Missouri in the spring. Its beautiful blooms make it one of the most striking plants of the season. The name "virginica" in its scientific classification refers to Virginia, which is why it is known as the Virginia springbeauty.
