Alocasia scalprum, the Samar lance, is a species of flowering plant in the family Araceae, native to Samar island, the Philippines. Well known from cultivation as a houseplant in the Philippines, and introduced to aroid enthusiasts as Alocasia cv. Samar Lance in 1984, it was not formally described as a species until 1999. Its glossy, lance-shaped leaves with embossed veins take on a blue sheen when mature. It is similar in appearance to Alocasia heterophylla.
Alocasia scalprum is generally resistant to disease and typically not prone to illness. However, it can be vulnerable to leaf spots if light and ventilation are poor or if it is overwatered. The plant is considered easy to care for, as it only needs regular watering and little additional attention. Alocasia scalprum is suitable for people who do not have the time or energy to devote to frequent care.
How to keep Alocasia Scalprum.
Light
Alocasia scalprum originates from habitats such as forest understories or rocky areas, where it grows in natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can tolerate full sun or full shade, showing its versatile and hardy nature.
Temperature
Alocasia scalprum comes from tropical areas, where the climate is generally warm and humid. Consequently, it is adapted to higher temperatures and humidity. It does not tolerate sudden temperature shifts and prefers a consistent temperature, so avoiding indoor temperature fluctuations is important. It typically cannot withstand cold conditions and needs warmer temperatures for growth. If the surrounding temperature falls too low, the plant may stop growing or even die.
Fertilizer
Alocasia scalprum needs the most fertilizer during its active growth period, which occurs mainly in spring, summer, and early fall. Fertilization is required to supply essential nutrients the soil may lack, supporting healthy root and stem development as well as the attractive foliage that is a distinguishing feature of this plant.
Pot & Repot
Repot Alocasia scalprum in spring or summer when temperatures are sufficiently warm, using a pot that's a bit larger and has good drainage. Water thoroughly after repotting, and place the plant in a spot with bright, indirect light. Consider using a moss pole for support as the plant develops.
