ON THIS PLANT

Alocasia nycteris, commonly known as the bat alocasia or the batwing alocasia, is a plant in the family Araceae. It is endemic to island of Panay in the Philippines. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant.

A note from PlantMom

Bat alocasia is highly disease-resistant and generally not prone to illness. However, it can develop leaf spots when light and ventilation are poor or when it is overwatered. Its care level is considered easy, as it mainly needs regular watering and little additional attention. Bat alocasia is suitable for people who lack the time and energy to perform regular maintenance.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Alocasia Nycteris.

Light

Bat alocasia originates from habitats such as forest understories or rocky areas, where it grows in natural shade. Its preferred light is partial sun, but it can adjust to full sun or full shade, reflecting its versatile and hardy nature.

Temperature

Bat alocasia comes from tropical areas where the climate is generally warm and humid. Consequently, it is well suited to high temperatures and humidity. It does not tolerate sudden temperature shifts and prefers a stable thermal environment, so avoiding temperature fluctuations indoors is important. It typically cannot withstand cold conditions and requires warmer temperatures to grow. If the environmental temperature falls too low, the plant may stop growing or even die.

Fertilizer

Appropriate fertilization is essential for a Bat alocasia's health and appearance. Apply fertilizer in summer, repeating the application monthly throughout the season. Nutrients fuel growth and support the plant's tissues. Fertilizing improves the Bat alocasia's floral display, helping it achieve its best blooms.

Pot & Repot

Repot a Bat alocasia in spring or summer once it's warm enough, choosing a pot that is slightly larger and has good drainage. Water thoroughly after repotting, and place it where it will receive bright, indirect light. Consider installing a moss pole to support the plant as it grows.
