ON THIS PLANT

Woodwardia unigemmata, the jewelled chain fern, is a species of evergreen fern native to Eastern Asia from the Himalayas to China, Japan and the Philippines. Growing to 1.5 m (4.9 ft) tall by 2.5 m (8.2 ft) broad, it bears pinnately-divided fronds which emerge red and turn green when mature. It occurs in areas of high rainfall. This plant is grown as an ornamental, and in the UK has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. It is an imposing architectural subject which is thought to be hardy down to −10 °C (14 °F). However it requires a sheltered position in well-cultivated, reliably moist soil.

A note from PlantMom

Jewelled chain fern generally resists disease well and has relatively few insect pests. Its care is considered difficult because it needs a consistently moist environment and frequent watering. However, its roots are susceptible to rot if it is overwatered or kept in poorly ventilated conditions. Jewelled chain fern is suited to people with some growing experience, as most growers can keep it alive for a period of time. Nevertheless, it may struggle to thrive and its leaves can dry out and become less healthy over time.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Woodwardia Unigemmata.

Light

The Jewelled chain fern is native to habitats such as forest understories and rocky locations that provide natural shade. It prefers Full Shade but can tolerate Partial Sun.

Water

Jewelled chain fern flourishes in humid environments and requires watering twice a week for optimal health. Being an evergreen plant, it retains its foliage year-round, so consistent watering is essential for maintaining its vibrant appearance.

Temperature

Jewelled chain fern originates from temperate habitats and prefers temperatures between 59 and 95 °F (15 to 35 ℃). In colder months, make sure it is well protected, and during scorching summer days give it shade to imitate its natural habitat.

Pruning

The jewelled chain fern is known for its arching fronds and gemmae, requiring minimal pruning. To promote growth and improve air circulation, you should trim away any dead fronds in early spring and clear away any debris. Be sure to use clean tools to prevent disease, which will enhance both the health and aesthetic appeal of the fern during its natural growth cycle.

What is the scientific name of the Jewelled chain fern?

The scientific name of the Jewelled chain fern is Woodwardia unigemmata. This fern is known for its preference for temperate climates, thriving in temperatures ranging between 59 to 95 °F (15 to 35 °C). It originates from environments that do not experience extreme temperatures, thus requiring some care to imitate its natural habitat in a garden setting.

What are the ideal growing conditions for the Jewelled chain fern?

The Jewelled chain fern thrives in temperate climate conditions, preferring temperatures that fall within the range of 59 to 95 °F (15 to 35 °C). To ensure the fern's health and growth, it is important to protect it during the colder months of the year.
