If your Slender vervain plant is in a pot, the most precise way to determine if it needs water is to check the soil moisture by sticking your finger into it. If the top two to three inches of soil are dry, then it's time to water the plant. For Slender vervain grown outdoors in the ground, you can use a similar method to check the soil moisture. Slender vervain exhibits strong cold resistance, so special frost protection measures are not typically necessary during the winter. However, should winter temperatures be expected to drop below -15°C, it becomes important to take steps to protect the plant from the cold. This includes covering the plant with protective materials such as soil or straw. Additionally, before the onset of the first freeze in autumn, it's recommended to water the plant abundantly, ensuring the soil remains moist and enters a frozen state to help prevent drought and water scarcity for the plant during the winter and early spring months.

To properly water your Slender vervain, do not be afraid to give it a generous amount of water. Make sure the first two to three inches of soil are dry before watering, and then water thoroughly until the soil is completely soaked. It's important to add enough water so that excess water flows out of the pot's drainage holes. If you don't see any excess water draining, then you have likely not watered enough. On the other hand, if water is not draining properly, it may indicate that the soil is not well-draining, which can also harm the plant. Other signs include chlorosis, where leaves lose their green color and turn yellow due to a breakdown in chlorophyll, sunscald characterized by pale or necrotic areas on plant tissue, leaf curling as a defense mechanism against excessive sunlight, wilting from increased water loss through transpiration, and leaf scorching shown by brown, dry, and crispy leaf edges.

Slender vervain is capable of tolerating cold well, thriving best when temperatures stay above 20°C. Even though there might not be noticeable changes to the plant during winter when kept above 0°C, temperatures falling below -15°C could potentially lead to a decrease in sprouting or even prevent sprouting altogether come spring. To manage this, in spring, it's advisable to remove any parts of the plant that have failed to sprout.
