ON THIS PLANT

Strobilanthes formosana is a species of flowering plant in the family Acanthaceae, native to Taiwan. A perennial herb reaching 80 cm (31 in), it is found in forest ravines, at elevations from 700 to 2,300 m. Paiwan people extracted a blue dye from its roots.

A note from PlantMom

Strobilanthes formosana shows good resistance to disease and is generally not likely to suffer from illnesses. However, it can be vulnerable to pests and diseases present in its surroundings. These problems are usually minor. In terms of care, this species requires a moderate level of maintenance. It should be pruned regularly to keep a neat appearance and encourage healthy growth. Feeding the plant with fertilizer can also help stimulate flowering. Strobilanthes formosana is suitable for anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or patio, and does not demand extensive plant-care experience. It may need more attention when grown indoors.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Strobilanthes Formosana.

Light

Strobilanthes formosana is native to habitats such as forest understories and rocky areas, where it grows under natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can tolerate full sun or full shade, reflecting its versatile and hardy nature.

Temperature

Strobilanthes formosana is fairly adaptable to temperature, able to endure higher heat and substantial temperature fluctuations. In hot weather, attention should be paid to watering and providing appropriate shade to avoid sunburn. Conversely, Strobilanthes formosana has limited tolerance for low temperatures. While it can tolerate some cold, excessively low temperatures can cause frost damage.

Fertilizer

The best time to fertilize a Strobilanthes formosana is in early spring, as it comes out of dormancy and begins active growth. Fertilizing supplies essential nutrients needed for healthy development. Although Strobilanthes formosana has relatively low fertilizer requirements, applying fertilizer once a year can improve its survival and encourage better, longer-lasting flowers.
