Strobilanthes alternata (synonym Hemigraphis alternata), may be known as red ivy, red-flame ivy, or waffle plant, is a member of the family Acanthaceae native to Java. It is a prostrate plant with purple colored leaves.
The waffle plant is generally disease-resistant and rarely affected by illnesses. However, it can develop leaf spots if light and ventilation are poor and if it is overwatered. Its care level is considered easy, since it mainly needs regular watering and little else. The waffle plant is suitable for people who don't have much time or energy to devote to consistent care.
How to keep Strobilanthes Alternata.
Light
The waffle plant prefers a moderate amount of sunlight, similar to its native setting where it does well in the dappled light under the forest canopy. Nonetheless, it can adjust to dimmer conditions. Excessive sun can stress the plant, while inadequate light may cause stunted growth.
Water
The waffle plant, originally from tropical forest understories, flourishes in conditions of high humidity and consistently moist soil. To keep the plant healthy, it requires weekly watering to avoid both drying out and becoming waterlogged. As an ornamental indoor plant, it benefits from added moisture, which can be provided by using pebble trays or humidifiers to replicate its natural habitat.
Temperature
The waffle plant favors a warm environment and cannot tolerate temperatures below 10 ℃ (50 ℉). It naturally grows in tropical regions where temperatures range from 20 to 38 ℃ (68 to 100 ℉). In summer, keep temperatures between 25 to 30 ℃ (77 to 86 ℉) and, if possible, reduce them to 18 to 21 ℃ (64 to 70 ℉) in winter. During cold periods, avoid positioning the plant near heaters or air conditioning units.
Fertilizer
The waffle plant needs the most fertilizer during its active growth period, which is mainly in spring, summer, and early fall. Fertilizing supplies essential nutrients that the soil may lack, supporting healthy root and stem growth and the attractive foliage that is a defining feature of this plant.
Pruning
The waffle plant has textured leaves with a striking purple-green color. To keep it healthy, it benefits from regular pruning from early to late spring. Trim away dead leaves, cut back stems, and pinch the tips to encourage bushier growth. Be sure to use sterilized tools to prevent disease. After pruning, maintain proper light and moisture levels to support the plant's optimal growth.
Pot & Repot
When repotting a Waffle plant, select a pot 1–2 inches (2.5–5.1 cm) larger with good drainage. Use a well-draining potting mix. Repot in spring or fall, making sure the root ball sits slightly below the rim of the pot. Water thoroughly after repotting and keep it in a warm spot with indirect sunlight.
