Sonchus fruticosus, the giant sow thistle, is a species of flowering plant in the tribe Cichorieae of the family Asteraceae. It is endemic to the islands of Madeira. The giant sow thistle is an impressive shrub native to the Madeiran evergreen forest habitat and growing up to 4 metres (13 feet) in height. It is also known as the shrubby sonchus, the shrubby sow thistle, or the Madeiran tree dandelion in English. On Madeira, it is known by the Portuguese vernacular names Leituga, língua de vaca, and serralha da rocha. The term leituga refers to a broad variety of plants, including prickly lettuce (Lactuca serriola) and cat's ear (Hypochaeris glabra).
Sonchus congestus is fairly resistant to disease and typically does not suffer from many illnesses. Still, it can be vulnerable to pests and diseases present in its environment, though such infections tend to be mild. Regarding care, this species needs moderate upkeep. It should be pruned regularly to preserve a neat appearance and support healthy growth. Applying fertilizer can also encourage blooming. Sonchus congestus is well suited for anyone who has outdoor space like a garden or patio and does not demand extensive gardening experience. It can need more attention if cultivated indoors.
How to keep Sonchus Fruticosus.
Light
Sonchus congestus is a sun-preferring perennial herbaceous species native to open habitats, commonly thriving in meadows and grasslands. It favors full sun but can also tolerate partial sun.
Temperature
Sonchus congestus adapts well to heat, being able to endure higher temperatures and wide temperature swings. In hot weather, attention should be paid to watering and providing some shade to avoid sunburn. Conversely, Sonchus congestus is less tolerant of cold: it can handle mild chill but very low temperatures may cause frost damage.
Fertilizer
Typically, one fertilizer application in spring is enough for Sonchus congestus, though additional feedings can promote maximum growth. Apply fertilizer roughly every one to one and a half months. Fertilization improves leaf appearance and function, helping maintain uniform color and a healthy texture. It also encourages root development and enhances nutrient uptake for long-term plant health.
