Lomelosia caucasica, the Caucasian pincushion flower, pincushion-flower or Caucasian scabious, is a species of flowering plant in the family Caprifoliaceae, native to the Caucasus, north eastern Turkey, and northern Iran. Growing to 60 cm (24 in) tall and broad, it is a clump-forming perennial with grey-green, divided leaves. Pincushion-shaped buds, borne on erect hairy, stems, open to pale blue or lavender flower heads, 4–8 cm (2–3 in) in diameter, from late summer through to autumn. It was formerly known as Scabiosa caucasica until 1985, when it became Lomelosia caucasica. It is still listed in some sources as Scabiosa caucasica.
Pincushion flower shows strong resistance to disease and is generally not prone to disease. Still, it can be affected by pests and diseases present in its surroundings. Such infections are typically mild. Regarding care, this plant needs moderate maintenance. It should be pruned on a regular basis to preserve a neat appearance and encourage healthy growth. Applying fertilizer can also help increase flowering. Pincushion flower is a good choice for anyone with outdoor space, like a garden or patio, and does not demand extensive gardening experience. It may need extra attention if kept indoors.
How to keep Scabiosa Caucasica.
Light
Pincushion flower does best when it receives a generous amount of light each day, recreating the bright conditions of its native habitat. Too little sunlight can cause irregular flowering, while too much can burn the leaves and stunt growth.
Temperature
Pincushion flower is native to regions with moderate climates and prefers temperatures from 41 to 89.6 °F (5 to 32 ℃). For best growth, reproduce these temperatures throughout the seasons, adjusting as needed to avoid conditions that are too hot or too cold.
Fertilizer
The best time to fertilize a Pincushion flower is in early spring, as it is coming out of dormancy and beginning active growth. Fertilizing supplies essential nutrients for healthy growth. Although the Pincushion flower has relatively low fertilizer needs, applying fertilizer annually can improve its survival and encourage better, longer-lasting blooms.
