ON THIS PLANT
A note from PlantMom

Purslane has moderate disease resistance and is more prone to issues from humidity and overwatering. It becomes more vulnerable to disease when it lacks light and is kept too wet. Regarding care, Purslane is drought-tolerant and can go long periods without watering. It requires little fertilizer and only occasional pruning. This makes it appropriate for people at any skill level, particularly those who prefer low-maintenance plants and who may sometimes be away from home for extended periods. It’s a suitable option for anyone who does not want to spend much time on plant care but still wants a plant that is easy to maintain.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Portulaca Sativa.

Light

Purslane, a plant indigenous to dry areas, flourishes under direct sunlight, reflecting the features of its original habitat which had intense sunlight and scarce shade. It can also adapt and grow in partial sunlight, hence demonstrating some flexibility in its growth.

Water

Purslane is a drought-tolerant plant that requires specific watering schedules based on the season. In the spring and fall, water it once a week. During the summer, increase to two or three times a week. In the winter, water every 15 days. Always use small amounts of water to avoid root rot. For the best results, water in the mornings or evenings during the summer, and around noon on sunny days in the winter.

Temperature

Purslane flourishes in hot conditions and needs elevated temperatures during its growth period to enhance its growth and metabolism. It thrives under abundant sunlight, suitable hydration levels, and adequate air circulation. Nonetheless, it's prone to harm from extremely low temperatures and too much watering. Hence, it's crucial to maintain equilibrium and steer clear of extremely high temperatures and too dry conditions as well.

Fertilizer

For Purslane, it is enough to feed light doses of fertilizer 1-2 times annually during its growing period. Refrain from fertilizing in winter and summer when the plant is dormant. Lessen the amount of fertilizer for plants that have been repotted and delay fertilizing for several months post repotting. Fertilizing aids in vigorous growth and promotes flowering.

Pruning

To maintain its shape and ornamental value, purslane should be pruned regularly throughout the growing season. Be sure to remove any branches that are crossed, growing inward, or too dense. In late fall, prune away old leaves to enhance ventilation. When repotting, cut back any rotten, weak, or excess roots.
