Polygaloides chamaebuxus, synonym Polygala chamaebuxus, the shrubby milkwort, is an ornamental plant in the family Polygalaceae. Its flowers are solitary or in pairs in the leaf axils. The inner two sepals, the wings, are upright and white to yellow, sometimes pinkish or purple. The keel petals are bright yellow, aging to brownish-red or purple. It is native to the Alps and the mountains of west-central Europe. It was known to be grown in cultivation in about 1658 and was illustrated by Carolus Clusius. Several varieties are also cultivated, for garden use, including the cultivar 'Grandiflora', whose flowers are purple-red and yellow. The plants are hardy, forming low-lying clumps up to 6 inches (15 cm) high and 20 inches (51 cm) in diameter. They may be propagated from softwood cuttings taken in early in the growing season. Some varieties grow best in ericaceous conditions.
Box-leaved milkwort is resistant to disease and is typically not susceptible to illnesses. As for care, the plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs only light watering, and larger plants usually do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have finished blooming. Box-leaved milkwortt is suitable for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or a deck, and does not demand much prior gardening experience.
How to keep Polygaloides Chamaebuxus.
Light
Box-leaved milkwort comes from open habitats, such as sunlit meadows and woodland edges, that offer plenty of light. It performs best in full sun but can also tolerate partial sun, showing good adaptability to varying light conditions.
Water
Box-leaved milkwort is well-suited for environments with balanced humidity and can withstand dry conditions because it is adapted to periodic rainfall. To avoid overwatering, it should be watered every 1-2 weeks. Being an evergreen plant, box-leaved milkwort keeps its leaves throughout the year and needs consistent moisture to maintain its vibrant foliage.
Fertilizer
Timing is important when fertilizing Box-leaved milkwort. Apply fertilizer in early spring and continue once a month until early summer. Fertilizer promotes attractive blooms and supplies energy during both dormant and active growth stages.
Pruning
Box-leaved milkwort is an evergreen subshrub that benefits from light pruning in early spring. To encourage bushier growth, improve air circulation, and increase flowering while aiding in pest control, remove up to one-third of the plant. As you prune, make sure to also cut away any dead or diseased stems. For the best results, use clean, sharp tools.
