Pinus teocote (teocote) is a species of conifer in the family Pinaceae. It is endemic to Mexico. 20–30 m tall and 75 cm diameter. Straight trunk and dense top. It grows at elevations of 1,500–3,000 m (4,900–9,800 ft). Most of the rainfall in its habitat occurs in summer.

A note from PlantMom

Aztec pine resists disease well and is generally not susceptible to illnesses. With regard to care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs only minimal watering, and larger plants typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they finish blooming. Aztec pinet is suitable for anyone who has an outdoor area, such as a garden or a deck, and does not demand much prior care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Pinus Teocote.

Light

Aztec pine is native to open habitats, like sunny meadows and forest edges, where plenty of light is available. It performs best in Full Sun but can tolerate Partial Sun, adjusting well to different light levels.

Temperature

Aztec pine shows strong adaptability to a range of climate conditions, whether facing hot summers or cold winters. Nevertheless, it has a preferred temperature range for growth. If temperatures rise too high, the plant becomes susceptible to heat and humidity stress that can lead to its death. In areas where temperatures approach the lower limit of its cold tolerance, applying insulation is important to protect the plant.

Fertilizer

Aztec pine has specific nutrient needs and does not require heavy fertilization. Spring is the best time to apply fertilizer for optimal growth. Providing nutrients enhances its health, increases its resistance to pests and diseases, and helps sustain its long lifespan.
