ON THIS PLANT

Paphiopedilum concolor is a small terrestrial orchid first described in 1865 as Cypripedium concolor. It has dark green and grey-green mottled leaves, up to 150 by 40 mm (6 by 1+1⁄2 in). Paphiopedilum concolor is native to southern China (Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi), Myanmar (Burma), Thailand and Southern and Central Vietnam, usually in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park in Quảng Bình Province. They are generally found in lowlands, below 300 m (1,000 ft) elevation, but have been found above 1,000 m (3,300 ft).Paphiopedilum concolor flowers in Spring and Autumn. Its 100 mm (4 in) tall scape has reddish hairs and carries one or two flowers approximately 70 mm (2+3⁄4 in) in diameter. These flowers come coloured in cream to peach, with dark red speckles. This orchid prefers a warm habitat and wet soil.

A note from PlantMom

One colored paphiopedilum typically has good resistance to diseases and relatively few insect pests. Its care level is considered difficult because it needs high humidity along with good air circulation and a low presence of harmful pathogens. Too much watering can cause root rot. Although anyone can grow One colored paphiopedilum, keeping it healthy and getting it to flower again requires more cultivation experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Paphiopedilum Concolor.

Light

A one-colored paphiopedilum is native to habitats like forest understories or rocky areas, where it grows in natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can adapt to full sun or full shade, demonstrating its versatile and hardy nature.

Water

The one-colored paphiopedilum flourishes in high humidity and moist conditions, needing to be watered weekly. It prefers well-draining substrates to prevent waterlogging, which reflects its epiphytic nature. Often cultivated indoors for ornamental purposes, this plant thrives in an environment that replicates its natural tropical understory habitat.

Humidity

This plant needs special care because it loves high humidity levels of 60-80% or more. The best way to achieve this is by placing a humidifier near the plant. Daily misting is also essential! Make sure the room has good ventilation.

Temperature

The single-colored paphiopedilum prefers warm conditions. It develops best in moderately high temperatures that are not overly hot or humid. Sunlight warms the plant and encourages blooming. Still, long periods of direct sun in summer can cause sunburn, so sunlight exposure should be limited during that season. The plant generally copes poorly with cold, so it needs sufficient protection and warmer conditions in winter to avoid freezing.

Fertilizer

Proper fertilization is essential for the health and appearance of One colored paphiopedilum. Fertilize One colored paphiopedilum in summer, applying it once a month throughout the season. The nutrients supply energy for growth and help maintain the plant’s tissues. Regular fertilization improves One colored paphiopedilum’s flowering, ensuring its best blooms.

Pruning

The vibrant blooms of a colored Paphiopedilum require specific care, including pruning, during their active growth period from early to late spring. To promote healthier growth, remove any dead leaves and spent stems. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can cause stress to the plant. Regular maintenance not only improves air circulation but also reduces the risk of pests and supports continuous growth throughout the year.

Pot & Repot

When repotting a one-colored paphiopedilum, pick a pot slightly larger than the current one that has good drainage, ideally a clear orchid pot. Use an orchid-specific, well-draining mix that includes bark or moss. Carefully clean the roots and trim any that are dead or rotting. Repot after flowering, usually in spring or fall; water thoroughly and place the plant in bright, indirect light. Avoid disturbing the roots once it is repotted.
