A note from PlantMom

Pachyphytum viride shows moderate disease resistance but is more sensitive to humidity. High humidity makes it more prone to illness, and it tends to develop root rot while dormant. For care, Pachyphytum viride tolerates drought but requires increased watering during the growing season. Watering should be greatly reduced or stopped entirely during the dormant period. Pachyphytum viride is best for growers with some experience, though it can be challenging to care for, particularly during dormancy. It is especially appropriate for those who can dedicate time to its care during the winter months.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Pachyphytum Viride.

Light

Native to arid regions, Pachyphytum viride performs best in full sun; its native habitat is marked by intense sunlight and scant shade. It can also tolerate partial sun, giving it some flexibility in growth.

Temperature

Although Pachyphytum viride can tolerate some heat, it prefers and grows best in cooler periods and becomes dormant during the summer. In very hot weather, shade should be provided to avoid leaf scorch from strong sunlight. Watering ought to be cut back or stopped in the peak of summer to avoid root rot. The plant shows its most vigorous growth in winter and spring. Provided temperatures do not fall too low, it will keep growing steadily.

Fertilizer

For Pachyphytum viride, light applications of fertilizer 1-2 times a year during the growing season are enough. Avoid fertilizing in winter and in summer when it is dormant. Cut back on fertilizer for plants that have been repotted, and wait a couple of months after repotting before applying fertilizer. Fertilizing helps maintain healthy growth and encourages blooms.

Pot & Repot

When repotting Pachyphytum viride, choose a pot slightly bigger than the current one that has good drainage. Use a gritty, well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Gently remove the plant from its old pot, brush away excess soil, and plant it at the same depth. Wait a few days before watering to let any root injury heal. Repot in spring or fall and place it in a brightly lit spot.
