ON THIS PLANT

Keckiella breviflora (formerly Penstemon breviflorus) is a species of flowering shrub in the plantain family known by the common name bush beardtongue. It is native to many of the western Transverse Ranges, Inner California Coast Ranges and the Sierra Nevada in California, and its range extends just into Nevada.

A note from PlantMom

Bush beardtongue has strong resistance to disease and is usually not susceptible to illnesses. Regarding care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. Planted outdoors, it needs only minimal watering, and larger specimens typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have finished blooming. Bush beardtongue is appropriate for anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand extensive care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Keckiella Breviflora.

Light

Bush beardtongue is native to habitats like forest understories or rocky locations, where it occurs in natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can tolerate full sun or full shade, reflecting its hardy and adaptable nature.

Temperature

Bush beardtongue adapts well to a variety of climate conditions, from searing summers to cold winters. Still, it has a preferred temperature range for optimal growth. If temperatures become excessively high, the plant can experience heat and humidity stress, which may lead to its death. In areas where temperatures reach the lower limit of its cold tolerance, providing insulation is important to protect the plant.

Fertilizer

The timing of fertilizer application is important for Bush beardtongue. Apply fertilizer in early spring and continue once a month through early summer. Fertilizer promotes attractive blooms and supplies energy both during dormancy and in periods of active growth.

Pruning

To promote healthy growth and abundant flowering in your bush beardtongue, it's best to prune it in early spring. Lightly trim any damaged branches to reduce stress and prevent diseases. Be sure to use clean, sharp tools and avoid heavy pruning, as this will help ensure continuous blooming throughout the growing season.
