ON THIS PLANT

Handroanthus chrysotrichus, synonym Tabebuia chrysotricha, commonly known as the golden trumpet tree, is a semi-evergreen/semi-deciduous (shedding foliage for a short period in late spring) tree from Brazil. It is very similar to and often confused with Tabebuia ochracea. In Portuguese it is called ipê amarelo and its flower is considered the national flower of Brazil.

A note from PlantMom

Golden trumpet tree has strong resistance to disease and is generally not susceptible to illnesses. In terms of care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs only minimal watering, and larger plants typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have finished blooming. Golden trumpet tree is suitable for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand much experience in plant care.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Handroanthus Chrysotrichus.

Light

Golden trumpet tree comes from open habitats, such as sunny meadows and forest edges, which provide abundant light. It flourishes in Full Sun but can also tolerate Partial Sun, adapting well to a range of sunlight conditions.

Temperature

The golden trumpet tree comes from tropical areas, where the climate is generally warm and humid. Consequently, it is adapted to high heat and humidity. It is sensitive to sudden temperature shifts and prefers a steady temperature, so indoor temperature fluctuations should be avoided. It typically does not tolerate cold and needs relatively high temperatures to grow. If the ambient temperature falls too low, the plant may stop growing or even die.

Fertilizer

The best time to fertilize a Golden trumpet tree is in early spring as it comes out of dormancy. This encourages overall growth and flower development. Fertilizing improves the foliage, stems, and branches, and promotes large, vivid, long-lasting flowers. It helps move nutrients from the roots to the flowers and enhances the plant's health and resistance to disease.
