Eucalyptus camphora, commonly known as swamp gum is a flowering plant that is endemic to south-eastern Australia. It is a species of small to medium-sized tree with smooth bark, sometimes rough at the base, broadly lance-shaped to egg-shaped or elliptic adult leaves, flower buds in groups of seven, white flowers and conical fruit. There are two subspecies, subspecies camphora, commonly known as broad-leaved sally or swamp gum and subspecies humeana, commonly known as mountain swamp gum.
Mountain swamp gum shows strong resistance to disease and is usually not susceptible to illnesses. As for care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs only light watering, and larger specimens typically do not need pruning. Smaller specimens, however, should be pruned after they have finished blooming. Mountain swamp gumt is suitable for anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or deck, and does not require extensive care experience.
How to keep Eucalyptus Camphora.
Light
Mountain swamp gum comes from open habitats, such as sunny meadows and forest edges, which provide plentiful light. It thrives in full sun but can also tolerate partial sun, adapting well to different sunlight conditions.
Water
Mountain swamp gum thrives in moist conditions and needs consistent deep watering, particularly during its early growth stages. Before watering again, make sure the top third of the soil has dried out. Using a moisture meter can be helpful in determining the soil's moisture levels. The best times to water are either early morning or in the evening.
Temperature
Mountain swamp gum shows strong adaptability to a variety of climate conditions, whether it's scorching summers or chilly winters. That said, it does have an optimal temperature range for growth. If temperatures become excessively high, the plant is susceptible to heat and humidity stress, which can lead to its death. In areas where temperatures approach the lower limit of its cold tolerance, it's important to use insulation measures to protect the plant.
Fertilizer
Fertilize your Mountain swamp gum in early spring to encourage healthy growth. Regular fertilizing improves overall health, producing vigorous growth, greater resilience to tough conditions, and enhanced resistance to diseases and pests. Follow a specific fertilization schedule for your Mountain swamp gum to ensure vibrant foliage with deep color and a lush appearance.
Pruning
Winter pruning is beneficial for the mountain swamp gum as it promotes healthy growth. The key techniques involve removing damaged branches, thinning out overcrowded areas to improve airflow, and shaping the tree. Pruning during the plant's dormant stage reduces stress and encourages vigorous regrowth in the spring, thereby enhancing both the tree's health and its ornamental value.
