ON THIS PLANT

Eragrostis tef, also known as teff, Williams lovegrass or annual bunch grass, is an annual grass, a species of lovegrass native to the Horn of Africa, notably to modern-day Ethiopia. It is cultivated for its edible seeds, also known as teff. Teff was one of the earliest plants domesticated. It is one of the most important staple crops in Ethiopia and Eritrea.

A note from PlantMom

Teff has medium resistance to disease and can be prone to ailments such as leaf spot. Its susceptibility to insect pests varies by variety, but most varieties are less resistant to pests. For care, Teff requires regular watering and fertilization, as well as frequent removal of yellow leaves. It is important to manage pests and diseases as they arise and to harvest the plant promptly. Teff is suitable for people who can commit some time and energy to regular care.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Eragrostis Tef.

Light

Teff comes from habitats with abundant sunlight, such as open fields and sunny meadows. It prefers full sun but can also tolerate partial sun.

Temperature

Teff prefers moderate temperatures — roughly those people usually find comfortable. It does best in conditions that are not too hot or too cold. The main concern with very high temperatures is sunburn, so it's advisable to give some shade in summer to prevent excessive heat. When temperatures decline, Teff goes dormant. If you want continuous growth, you need to keep temperatures higher through the winter. Frost can injure the plant and should be avoided.

Fertilizer

For optimal growth, teff needs three fertilizer applications: one before planting, another one month after the seedlings emerge, and a final application one to one-and-a-half months after the second. Some teff varieties also benefit from extra fertilizer at planting to promote rapid growth.

Pruning

Teff is a warm-season annual grass that thrives with selective trimming from early to late spring. Important techniques include removing dead stems and shaping any overgrowth to enhance airflow, light penetration, and overall plant health. Be sure to sterilize your tools to prevent infections, and consult horticultural guides for specific information about different varieties.
