ON THIS PLANT

Encephalartos natalensis, the Natal cycad or giant cycad, is a species of cycad that is endemic to the Qumbu and Tabankulu areas of the northern part of the Eastern Cape, and through most of KwaZulu-Natal. The number of mature individuals of this species is declining and the International Union for Conservation of Nature has assessed its conservation status as being "near threatened".

A note from PlantMom

The Natal giant cycad is resistant to disease and is generally not susceptible to illnesses. Regarding care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it requires minimal watering, and larger plants typically do not need pruning. However, smaller plants should be pruned after they have bloomed. The Natal giant cycad is suitable for anyone with an outdoor space, such as a garden or deck, and does not require a great deal of plant-care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Encephalartos Natalensis.

Light

The Natal giant cycad is native to habitats such as forest understories and rocky areas, where it grows in natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can adapt to full sun or full shade, demonstrating its versatile and hardy nature.

Temperature

The Natal giant cycad shows good adaptability to temperature, able to tolerate higher temperatures and larger temperature fluctuations. When temperatures are high, attention should be paid to watering and suitable shading should be provided to prevent sunburn. However, the Natal giant cycad has relatively poor tolerance to low temperatures; although it can withstand some cold, excessively cold conditions can cause frost damage.

Fertilizer

The Natal giant cycad has specific nutrient needs and does not require heavy fertilization. Spring is the best time to fertilize for optimal growth. Providing nutrients enhances its health, increases its resistance to pests and diseases, and helps sustain its long lifespan.
