ON THIS PLANT

Delphinium patens is a species of larkspur known by the common names zigzag larkspur and spreading larkspur. It is a wildflower limited mainly to California. Though not yet confirmed there, it is expected in Baja California. Plants grow typically 20 to 50 centimeters tall and bear up to 36 flowers each. The stems are mostly hairless, have reddish bases, and bears leaves on the lower half. Each leaf is divided into 3 to 9 lobes. The flower has dark blue sepals, the latter ones reflexed. The spur at the back of the flower is 4 to 8 millimeters long. The cleft at the center of the flower has white or yellowish scattered hairs. The elongated fruit is one or two centimeters long and contains pitted seeds. There are three subspecies:

Delphinium patens subsp. hepaticoideum Delphinium patens subsp. montanum Delphinium patens subsp. patensDelphinium patens hybridizes freely with a few other species in Delphinium section Grumosa in the wild.

A note from PlantMom

Zigzag larkspur is fairly disease-resistant and typically not prone to illness. However, it can be affected by pests and diseases present in its environment. These infections are usually mild. In terms of care, the plant requires moderate maintenance. It should be pruned regularly to preserve a tidy appearance and promote healthy growth. Applying fertilizer can also help encourage flowering. Zigzag larkspur is suitable for anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or patio, and does not need extensive gardening experience. It may demand more attention when cultivated indoors.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Delphinium Patens.

Light

Zigzag larkspur is a perennial herbaceous plant that prefers sunny conditions and originates from open habitats, commonly flourishing in meadows and grasslands. It favors full sun but can also tolerate partial sun.

Water

Zigzag larkspur flourishes when the soil stays consistently moist, promoting optimal flowering. During dry periods, water the plants thoroughly to keep the soil damp at least 2.5 cm (1 inch) below the surface. Be careful to avoid waterlogging, as this can cause root and crown rot.

Temperature

Zigzag larkspur can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, but its distribution may still be restricted by particular combinations of moisture and heat. It grows best in warm summer climates with sufficient rainfall or irrigation. Extended periods of cloudy, rainy weather or prolonged high temperatures can raise the risk of Zigzag larkspur dying. In winter, adequate protection from cold can increase the plant’s survival rate.

Fertilizer

The best time to fertilize a Zigzag larkspur is in early spring, when it is coming out of dormancy and beginning active growth. Fertilization supplies essential nutrients for healthy growth. Although Zigzag larkspur has relatively low fertilizer requirements, annual fertilization can improve its survival and encourage better, longer-lasting flowers.

Pruning

The zigzag larkspur, a flowering perennial, benefits from pruning in early spring to promote healthy growth. Trim any damaged stems and remove spent spikes to encourage repeat blooms. Regular pruning improves air circulation and enhances the plant's ornamental appeal. It also aligns with the zigzag larkspur's growth cycle, helping to reduce the risk of disease.
