ON THIS PLANT

Crataegus azarolus, commonly known as the Azarole or Mediterranean Hawthorn, is a small deciduous tree or shrub from the Rosaceae family. Native to Mediterranean regions, it can be found in countries such as Italy, Spain, Greece, and Turkey. The plant can reach up to 6 meters in height and features a dense crown with thorny branches.

The leaves of Crataegus azarolus are dark green, oval-shaped, and have serrated edges. In springtime, the plant produces small white flowers that bloom in clusters, which are then followed by round fruits that resemble small apples or berries. These fruits transition from green to yellowish-orange as they ripen.

For centuries, the fruit of the Azarole has been valued for its medicinal properties, largely due to its high content of vitamins A and C, as well as antioxidants. It is also commonly used in making jams, jellies, liqueurs, and other culinary products.

Crataegus azarolus thrives in well-drained soils with full sun exposure but can also tolerate partial shade. It is a hardy plant that requires minimal maintenance once established, although it might be susceptible to pests such as aphids or spider mites.

Overall, Crataegus azarolus is an attractive ornamental tree or shrub with medicinal properties, making it an excellent addition to gardens or landscapes. It is particularly well-suited to Mediterranean regions where it thrives in hot climate conditions.
