A note from PlantMom

Money Maker has moderate disease resistance and is more sensitive to humidity. It is vulnerable to disease when humidity is high and is liable to develop root rot during dormancy. In terms of care, Money Maker is drought tolerant but requires more water in the growing season. Watering should be sharply reduced or stopped entirely during the dormant period. Money Maker is suited to people with some growing experience, though it can be challenging to care for, especially during dormancy. It is particularly appropriate for those who can commit time to its care in the winter months.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Crassula Swaziensis.

Light

Money Maker is native to areas with scattered light, like the lower layers of forests or rocky regions, which offer natural shadows. It favors semi-sunny conditions but can withstand full sun as well.

Temperature

Though Money Maker is somewhat resistant to heat, it mainly flourishes and develops in the cooler periods, becoming inactive in the summer. It is critical to offer some shading in the high heat of summer to safeguard against extreme sunlight causing burns. Water provision should be either limited or discontinued during the most sweltering part of the year to thwart root decay. Money Maker undergoes rapid development during the colder seasons of winter and spring. Provided that the temperature does not descend excessively, it will consistently continue its growth.

Fertilizer

For Money Maker, small amounts of fertilizer applied once or twice a year during the growing season are sufficient. Do not fertilize in winter or in summer while the plant is dormant. Cut back on fertilizer for repotted plants and wait a couple of months after repotting before feeding. Fertilizing helps maintain healthy growth and promotes flowering.

Pruning

The Crassula swaziensis is known for its succulent leaves and compact growth. To encourage fuller development, improve air circulation, and prevent disease, it is best to prune the plant in early spring. Pruning will help remove leggy stems and promote healthier growth. Be sure to use sterilized tools when pruning to prevent infection and ensure a more vigorous plant.

Pot & Repot

When replanting Money Maker, choose a container that is a bit bigger than the current one and ensure it has adequate drainage. Utilize a gritty succulent or cactus blend that drains well. Gently extract the plant from its previous pot, shake off surplus soil, and transplant it at an equal depth. Allow a couple of days before watering to let any possible damage to the roots mend. It's preferable to replant in either spring or autumn and place the plant in an area with vivid lighting.
