A note from PlantMom

Crassula susannae has moderate disease resistance and is fairly sensitive to humidity. It becomes vulnerable to disease when humidity is high and is susceptible to root rot during dormancy. For care, Crassula susannae tolerates drought but requires more water in the growing season. Watering should be sharply reduced or stopped entirely while it is dormant. Crassula susannae is appropriate for people with some growing experience, though it can be difficult to look after, especially during dormancy. It is particularly suited to those who can dedicate time to its care in the winter months.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Crassula Susannae.

Light

Crassula susannae, native to dry regions, does best in full sun, as its natural habitat has intense sunlight and very little shade. It can also tolerate partial sun, providing some flexibility in its growth.

Temperature

Although Crassula susannae can tolerate some heat, it mainly does best and grows during the cooler months, entering dormancy in summer. In hot summer conditions, provide shade to avoid scorching from intense sunlight. Watering should be reduced or stopped during the hottest period to prevent root rot. Winter and spring are when Crassula susannae grows vigorously. As long as temperatures do not fall too low, it will continue to grow steadily.

Fertilizer

Crassula susannae only needs light applications of fertilizer once or twice a year during the growing season. Do not fertilize in winter and summer when it is dormant. Use less fertilizer for plants that have been repotted, and wait a couple of months after repotting before feeding. Fertilizing promotes healthy growth and encourages blooming.

Pot & Repot

When repotting Crassula susannae, choose a container slightly larger than the current one that provides good drainage. Use a gritty, well-draining succulent or cactus mix. Gently remove the plant from its old pot, brush off excess soil, and set it in at the same depth. Delay watering for a few days to let any root damage heal. Repot in spring or fall and place it in a brightly lit spot.
