A note from PlantMom

Crassula socialis has moderate disease resistance and is relatively sensitive to humidity. It is vulnerable to disease in high-humidity conditions and tends to develop root rot during dormancy. Regarding care, Crassula socialis tolerates drought but requires increased watering in the growing season. Watering should be greatly reduced or stopped entirely during the dormant period. Crassula socialis is best suited to growers with some experience, as it can be challenging to care for, particularly during dormancy. It is especially appropriate for those who can devote time to its care over the winter months.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Crassula Socialis.

Light

Native to dry regions, Crassula socialis does best in full sun — its natural habitat has strong sunlight and very little shade. It will also tolerate partial sun, providing some flexibility in its cultivation.

Water

Crassula socialis is well-suited to arid environments, needing minimal watering—about once every three weeks—thanks to its drought tolerance. For optimal growth, it prefers well-draining soil to prevent root rot, which mirrors the low-water conditions of its natural habitat. Often grown indoors, this plant is appreciated for its compact size and decorative charm.

Temperature

Although Crassula socialis can tolerate some heat, it mainly thrives and grows in cooler seasons and goes dormant in summer. During very hot summer temperatures, provide shade to prevent leaves from scorching in intense sunlight. Watering should be reduced or stopped during the hottest part of the year to avoid root rot. Winter and spring are when Crassula socialis grows most vigorously; as long as temperatures do not fall too low, it will continue to grow steadily.

Fertilizer

Crassula socialis only needs light fertilizer applications 1-2 times a year during the growing season. Do not fertilize in winter and summer when it is dormant. Use less fertilizer for repotted plants and wait a couple of months after repotting before applying fertilizer. Fertilizing helps maintain healthy growth and promotes flowering.

Pruning

To keep Crassula socialis well-shaped, it is advisable to prune it during the spring and autumn. Focus on removing any excess or densely packed branches. For propagation, select thick stems with 5-6 leaves. Treat the cut ends with sulfur powder to prevent infection and plant them after they have healed. When watering the cuttings, use a watering can to gently moisten the soil.

Pot & Repot

When repotting Crassula socialis, choose a pot slightly bigger than the current one that provides good drainage. Use a gritty, well-draining succulent or cactus mix. Gently remove the plant from its old container, brush off excess soil, and place it at the same planting depth. Wait several days before watering so any root damage can heal. Repot in spring or fall, and set the plant in a brightly lit location.
