ON THIS PLANT

Commelina diffusa, commonly known as spreading dayflower, is a perennial herbaceous plant in the Commelinaceae family. Native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, it has now spread and become naturalized in many parts of the world. This plant features a prostrate growth habit and can quickly expand through its creeping stems that root at the nodes. Its alternate, simple leaves are ovate or elliptic with pointed tips and characterized by parallel veins.

The flowers are small, approximately 1 cm in diameter, and are blue or purple with three uneven-sized petals. They bloom from spring to fall on short stalks that emerge from the leaf axils. The fruit of the plant is a capsule that contains several seeds.

Spreading dayflower thrives in moist soils but can tolerate dry conditions once established. It grows well in both full sun and partial shade and is suitable for use as ground cover or in border plantings.

Traditionally, indigenous people of South America have used the plant for medicinal purposes, such as treating fever, inflammation, wounds, and skin diseases.

Overall, Commelina diffusa is an attractive ground cover option for gardeners seeking an easy-to-grow perennial with beautiful blue flowers that bloom throughout most of the growing season. Its medicinal properties further enhance its value, making it a useful plant beyond its aesthetic appeal.
