Clematis occidentalis, commonly known as western blue virginsbower, is a flowering plant in the buttercup family. Native to western North America, it thrives in a variety of habitats, including forests, meadows, and along streams. This plant typically grows as a vine or climbing shrub, reaching heights of up to 10 feet. The dark green leaves are divided into three leaflets, while the bell-shaped flowers, which have four or five petals, range in color from blue to purple. Clematis occidentalis blooms from late spring through early summer and produces attractive seed heads that persist into fall. Often used ornamentally for its beautiful flowers, this plant also has medicinal properties. Native Americans have used it to treat various ailments such as headaches, rheumatism, and skin irritations.
