ON THIS PLANT

Carduus argentatus, sometimes known as the silver thistle, is an annual herb in the family Asteraceae. As a member of the genus Carduus it is known as a plumeless thistle. It is found throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East. Frequently growing in disturbed habitats, it is often found in sandy and stony desert wadis. It is found in the eastern deserts of Egypt, through the East Mediterranean region and into Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan. It can be found growing in open woodlands and shrublands, on steppes and semi-steppes as well as in extreme desert conditions. It grows among mountain vegetation on Mount Hermon in the Golan Heights. In Crete it is found at altitudes of up to 1,400 metres (4,600 ft).

A note from PlantMom

Silvery thistle is fairly disease-resistant and generally not prone to illnesses. However, it can be affected by pests and diseases present in its surroundings. These problems are usually mild. In terms of care, the plant needs moderate maintenance. It should be pruned regularly to keep a neat appearance and encourage healthy growth. Fertilizing can also help stimulate flowering. Silvery thistle is suitable for anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or patio, and does not require extensive care experience. It may need more attention if grown indoors.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Carduus Argentatus.

Light

Silvery thistle comes from bright, open habitats and performs best in full sun. It will tolerate some shade but prefers direct sunlight for optimal growth. This plant, which can be annual or biennial, is noted for its sun-loving habit.

Temperature

Silvery thistle can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, but its occurrence may still be restricted by different mixes of moisture and heat. It performs best in warm summer conditions with enough rainfall or watering. Long spells of cloudy, rainy weather, as well as prolonged high temperatures, make Silvery thistle more likely to die. In winter, suitable protection from cold can increase the plant's survival chances.

Fertilizer

Silvery thistles are considered heavy feeders with respect to nutrients. They need frequent, low doses of nitrogen and potassium fertilizers and periodic applications of phosphorus, micronutrients, sulfur, and magnesium to maintain good growth and bright coloration. Continuous fertilization throughout the growing season is necessary to prevent deficiency symptoms and maintain optimal growth.

Pruning

Silvery thistle, known for its distinctive silver foliage, benefits from regular pruning between early and late spring. This practice not only improves the plant’s health and appearance but also shapes it, removes damaged stems, encourages flowering, enhances air circulation, and reduces the risk of disease. Be sure to use clean, sharp tools when pruning.
