ON THIS PLANT

Carduus argentatus, sometimes known as the silver thistle, is an annual herb in the family Asteraceae. As a member of the genus Carduus it is known as a plumeless thistle. It is found throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East. Frequently growing in disturbed habitats, it is often found in sandy and stony desert wadis. It is found in the eastern deserts of Egypt, through the East Mediterranean region and into Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan. It can be found growing in open woodlands and shrublands, on steppes and semi-steppes as well as in extreme desert conditions. It grows among mountain vegetation on Mount Hermon in the Golan Heights. In Crete it is found at altitudes of up to 1,400 metres (4,600 ft).

A note from PlantMom

Carduus acicularis exhibits good disease resistance and is generally not prone to illness. However, it can still be vulnerable to pests and diseases present in its environment. Such infections are usually mild. Regarding care, this plant requires moderate maintenance. It should be pruned regularly to preserve an attractive appearance and healthy growth. Applying fertilizer can also help encourage flowering. Carduus acicularis is appropriate for anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or patio, and does not demand extensive care experience. It may need additional attention if grown indoors.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Carduus Acicularis.

Light

Carduus acicularis comes from bright, open habitats and performs best in full sun. It can tolerate some partial shade but prefers direct sunlight for optimal growth. This plant, which can be annual or biennial, is noted for its sun-loving character.

Temperature

Carduus acicularis can tolerate a wide range of temperature conditions, but its distribution may still be constrained by different combinations of water and heat. It does best in warm summer climates with sufficient rainfall or watering. Prolonged periods of cloudy, rainy weather, as well as extended high temperatures, can increase the likelihood of Carduus acicularis dying. In winter, adequate protection from cold can improve the plant's survival rate.

Fertilizer

Carduus acicularis are regarded as heavy nutrient feeders. They require frequent, low doses of nitrogen and potassium fertilizers and occasional applications of phosphorus, micronutrients, sulfur, and magnesium to sustain healthy growth and bright coloration. Continuous fertilization during the growing season is needed to prevent deficiency symptoms and maintain optimal growth.
