ON THIS PLANT

Brachychiton bidwillii, commonly known as the dwarf kurrajong or little kurrajong, is a small tree of the genus Brachychiton found in tropical areas of eastern Australia. It was originally classified in the family Sterculiaceae, which is now within Malvaceae.

A note from PlantMom

Little kurrajong is well resistant to disease and is generally not susceptible to illnesses. Regarding care, this plant is fairly low maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs only minimal watering, and larger plants usually do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have finished blooming. Little kurrajong is appropriate for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand much prior plant-care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Brachychiton Bidwillii.

Light

Little kurrajong comes from open habitats, such as sunny meadows and forest edges, which supply plenty of light. It does best in Full Sun but can tolerate Partial Sun, adapting well to a range of sunlight conditions.

Humidity

This plant will thrive in moderate humidity, which is probably the level in your home. However, misting it a few times a week can be very beneficial. Make sure the room has good ventilation.

Temperature

Little kurrajong demonstrates strong temperature adaptability, tolerating high heat and wide temperature swings. During hot periods, attention should be paid to watering and providing suitable shade to avoid sunburn. On the other hand, Little kurrajong is less tolerant of low temperatures: although it can endure some cold, very cold conditions may cause frost damage.

Fertilizer

Timing is essential when fertilizing Little kurrajong. Begin in early spring and apply monthly until early summer. Fertilizer promotes attractive blooms and supplies energy during both dormant and active growth stages.
