Begonia Dichotoma

Kidney begonia is native to habitats such as forest understories and rocky areas, where it occurs in natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can also adapt to full sun or full shade, illustrating its versatile and hardy nature.

Kidney begonia comes from tropical areas, where the climate is typically warm and humid. Consequently, it is adapted to high temperatures and humidity. It does not tolerate sudden temperature changes and prefers a stable thermal environment, so avoiding temperature fluctuations indoors is important. It usually cannot withstand cold conditions and needs higher temperatures to grow. If the surrounding temperature falls too low, the plant may stop growing or even die.

Kidney begonia needs the most fertilizer during its active growth period, which is mainly in spring, summer, and early fall. Fertilizing supplies essential nutrients the soil may lack, supporting healthy root and stem growth and encouraging the attractive foliage that is a defining characteristic of this plant.

When repotting a kidney begonia, select a pot 1-2 inches (2.5–5.1 cm) larger with good drainage. Use a well-draining potting mix. Repot in spring or fall, making sure the root ball sits slightly below the rim of the pot. Water thoroughly after repotting and keep it in a warm spot with indirect sunlight.
