ON THIS PLANT

Austrocylindropuntia verschaffeltii, commonly known as the Peruvian Old Man Cactus, is a cactus species native to Peru. This slow-growing plant can reach up to 3 meters in height and 1 meter in width. Its cylindrical stems are covered with long, white hairs, giving it a fuzzy appearance and earning it the nickname "Old Man Cactus." The stems are segmented and have small spines at the base of each segment.

In late spring or early summer, the Peruvian Old Man Cactus produces small yellow flowers. These flowers are followed by edible red fruits that contain numerous seeds.

This cactus is drought-tolerant and thrives in well-draining soil with full sun exposure. It can be propagated by stem cuttings or seeds.

Austrocylindropuntia verschaffeltii is popular as an ornamental plant due to its unique appearance and low maintenance requirements. However, it should be handled with care, as its spines can cause skin irritation if touched without protection.
