ON THIS PLANT

Atriplex hymenelytra, the desert holly, is silvery-whitish-gray shrub in the family Amaranthaceae, native to deserts of the southwestern United States. It is the most drought tolerant saltbush in North America. It can tolerate the hottest and driest sites in Death Valley, and remains active most of the year. The common name refers to the leaves that are shaped similar to holly, but the plants are not related. The toothed leaves and the small reddish fruits borne on the plant give it a passing resemblance to the unrelated European holly.

A note from PlantMom

Desertholly saltbush is resistant to disease and typically not susceptible to illnesses. Regarding care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. Planted outdoors, it needs very little watering, and larger specimens usually do not require pruning. Smaller specimens, however, should be trimmed after they finish flowering. Desertholly saltbush is appropriate for anyone with an outdoor area, like a garden or deck, and does not demand extensive plant-care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Atriplex Hymenelytra.

Light

Desertholly saltbush does best with abundant sunlight during the day. Sunlight enhances its health and supports vigorous growth at every stage. Native to sun-dominated habitats, it tolerates situations with very little shade. Too little light can slow its growth, while excessive sun exposure does not harm it.

Temperature

Desertholly saltbush is naturally adapted to arid habitats with temperatures between 32 and 90 °F (0 to 32 ℃). It prefers moderate temperatures but can withstand colder climates when necessary. In colder regions, maintain mild warmth on a seasonal basis.

Fertilizer

Fertilize your Desertholly saltbush in early spring to encourage healthy growth. Regular feeding improves overall health, leading to vigorous growth, greater resilience in difficult conditions, and increased resistance to pests and diseases. Keep a consistent fertilization schedule for your Desertholly saltbush to maintain vibrant, deep-colored foliage and a lush appearance.
