ON THIS PLANT

Veltheimia bracteata is a species of plant. It belongs to the genus Veltheimia, which contains only one other species, Velthemia capensis. Veltheimia bracteata is commonly referred to as the forest lily, sand onion, or red hot poker (though the term “red hot poker” is also applied to species in the genus Kniphofia). This pendent shaped plant ranges in color from a yellowish pink to red. It is a winter flowering perennial plant, so is in full bloom when other flowers have withered away. Plants grow to be 12–18 inches (30–46 cm) in height.

A note from PlantMom

Forest lily has moderate disease resistance but is more vulnerable to high humidity and excess watering. It also becomes more prone to disease if kept in low light and overwatered. Regarding care, Forest lily is drought-tolerant and can withstand extended periods without watering. It requires little fertilizer and only occasional pruning. This makes it suitable for people of all levels of experience, especially those who want to spend less time caring for their plants and who may occasionally be away from home for extended periods. It is a good option for those who do not want to spend a lot of time on plant care yet still want a plant that is easy to maintain.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Veltheimia Bracteata.

Light

The forest lily comes from habitats with dappled light, such as the forest understory or rocky areas that provide natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can also tolerate full sun.

Temperature

Forest lily does best in warm conditions and needs higher temperatures during the growing season to encourage growth and metabolic activity. It prefers plenty of sunlight, moderate moisture, and good air circulation. However, it can be harmed by very low temperatures and by excessive watering. It is important to maintain balance and avoid both overly high temperatures and overly dry conditions.

Fertilizer

For Forest lily, light applications of fertilizer once or twice a year during the growing season are sufficient. Do not fertilize in winter or during the summer dormancy. Use less fertilizer for repotted plants and wait a couple of months after repotting before applying any fertilizer. Fertilizing promotes healthy growth and encourages blooms.
