Utricularia geminiscapa, the hiddenfruit bladderwort, is a perennial, medium-sized species of aquatic bladderwort. This species occurs naturally in the northeastern United States and Canada with one record from British Columbia in Western Canada. A small population is present near Westport in New Zealand where the species is thought to have recently naturalized- it was first recorded in this area in 1975.
Hidden-fruit bladderwort has moderate resistance to disease and needs a high-humidity environment. However, if ventilation is poor it can be prone to rot. The plant’s care is considered difficult because it requires constant humidification to keep humidity levels high. It is also highly prone to rot when airflow is inadequate and temperatures are too warm. Hidden-fruit bladderwort is best suited to growers with more experience who can provide an appropriate growing environment.
How to keep Utricularia Geminiscapa.
Light
Hidden-fruit bladderwort is native to habitats with abundant sunlight, such as open bogs and sunny wetlands. It favors full sun but can also tolerate partial sunlight.
Temperature
Hidden-fruit bladderwort prefers moderate temperatures, roughly the same range that most people find comfortable. It does best in conditions that are neither very hot nor very cold. The primary problem with high temperatures is the risk of sunburn, so providing some shade in summer is recommended to prevent excessive heat. When temperatures fall, Hidden-fruit bladderwort becomes dormant. If continuous growth is wanted, higher winter temperatures must be maintained. Frost can damage the plant and should be avoided.
Pot & Repot
When repotting Hidden-fruit bladderwort, select a pot 1–2 inches (2.5–5.1 cm) larger with good drainage. Use a well-draining potting mix. Repot in spring or fall, making sure the root ball sits slightly below the rim of the flower pot. Water thoroughly after repotting and place in a warm spot with indirect sunlight.
