Trillium Erectum

Trillium erectum, commonly known as red trillium or wake-robin, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to eastern North America. It typically grows to a height of 15-45 cm and produces a single stem adorned with three large leaves arranged in a whorl at the top. The plant blooms in early spring, showcasing three deep red, slightly curved petals that form an open cup shape. These flowers eventually give way to small berries that transition from green to red as they mature.

Red trillium thrives in moist, well-drained soils and can be found in deciduous forests, along woodland edges, and near streams or rivers. It serves as an important food source for pollinators, including bees and butterflies.

For centuries, Indigenous peoples have used the plant for medicinal purposes, attributing antiseptic properties to it and applying it topically to wounds or sores. However, it is important to note that the entire plant is toxic if ingested.

Red trillium has gained popularity among gardeners due to its striking appearance. However, it is crucial to cultivate it from seed or purchase it from reputable nurseries rather than taking it from the wild. Wild populations are threatened by habitat loss due to development and over-harvesting for ornamental purposes.
