ON THIS PLANT

Toxicodendron sylvestre, the mountain lacquer tree or wood lacquer tree, is a species of flowering plant in the sumac family Anacardiaceae. It is native to southern China, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, and the Ryukyu Islands. A deciduous tree reaching 10 m (33 ft), it is typically found in forests at elevations from 100 to 800 m, occasionally higher.

A note from PlantMom

Rhus sylvestris shows strong resistance to disease and is typically not susceptible to illnesses. Regarding maintenance, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs little watering, and larger specimens usually do not require pruning. Smaller specimens, however, should be trimmed after they finish blooming. Rhus sylvestris is appropriate for anyone who has an outdoor area, like a garden or a deck, and it does not demand extensive plant-care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Toxicodendron Sylvestre.

Light

Rhus sylvestris naturally occurs in habitats like forest understories or rocky areas, where it grows in natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can adapt to full sun or full shade, showing its versatile and hardy nature.

Temperature

Rhus sylvestris shows strong adaptability to a range of climatic conditions, from hot summers to cold winters. However, it has a preferred temperature range for optimal growth. If temperatures rise too high, the plant becomes vulnerable to heat and humidity stress, which can cause it to die. In areas where temperatures approach the lower limit of its cold tolerance, insulating measures should be used to protect the plant.

Fertilizer

Fertilize your Rhus sylvestris in early spring to encourage healthy growth. Regular feeding boosts overall health, producing vigorous growth, better toughness in challenging conditions, and improved resistance to pests and diseases. Keep a consistent fertilization schedule to maintain vibrant, deeply colored, and lush foliage.
