ON THIS PLANT

Pleroma mutabile, synonym Tibouchina mutabilis, is an evergreen pioneer tree with an open crown, native to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, mainly at the Serra do Mar zone, in the states of São Paulo, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, and Santa Catarina. In Brazil, it is named manacá-da-serra. The word "manacá" means "flower" in Tupi-guarani language. "Serra" (ridge, in English) alludes to the Serra do Mar (Sea's Ridge). In Australia, it is a popular ornamental plant, also known as glory bush.

A note from PlantMom

Glory bush has strong resistance to disease and is generally unlikely to develop illnesses. In terms of upkeep, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs only minimal watering, and larger specimens typically do not require pruning. Smaller specimens, however, should be pruned after they finish blooming. Glory bush is suitable for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand extensive care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Tibouchina Mutabilis.

Light

Glory bush comes from open habitats, such as sunny meadows and forest edges, where light is plentiful. It thrives in Full Sun but can also tolerate Partial Sun, adjusting well to a range of light conditions.

Humidity

This plant will thrive in moderate humidity, which is probably the level in your home. However, misting it a few times a week can be very beneficial. Make sure the room has good ventilation.

Temperature

Glory bush comes from tropical areas, where the climate is generally warm and humid. Therefore it is well suited to high temperatures and humidity. It does not tolerate sudden temperature shifts and prefers a steady temperature, so avoiding indoor temperature fluctuations is important. It usually cannot endure cold conditions and needs warmer temperatures to grow. If the environmental temperature falls too low, the plant may stop growing or even perish.

Fertilizer

The best time to fertilize a Glory bush is in early spring as it breaks dormancy. This supports overall growth and flower production. Fertilizing improves the foliage, stems, and branches and encourages large, vivid, long-lasting flowers. It helps move nutrients from the roots to the blooms and enhances the plant's health and disease resistance.
