Syringa Pekinensis

ON THIS PLANT

Syringa reticulata subsp. pekinensis, also known as the Pekin lilac or the Chinese tree lilac, grows in an open, multi-stemmed form to a height of 15 to 20 feet, with a spread of 10 to 15 feet. They are native to northern China but grow in USDA hardiness zones 3 through 7. It is grown as an ornamental tree in Europe and North America.

A note from PlantMom

Syringa reticulata subsp. pekinensis is highly resistant to disease and is generally not susceptible to illnesses. This plant is fairly low-maintenance. Planted outdoors it needs only minimal watering, and larger specimens typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they finish blooming. Syringa reticulata subsp. pekinensis is suitable for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand much prior care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Syringa Pekinensis.

Light

Syringa reticulata subsp. pekinensis is native to open habitats, such as sunny meadows and the edges of forests, where abundant light is present. It prefers Full Sun but can tolerate Partial Sun, adapting well to different light conditions.

Temperature

Syringa reticulata subsp. pekinensis is highly adaptable to a wide range of climatic conditions, from very hot summers to cold winters. However, it does have an optimal temperature range for growth. If temperatures become too high, the plant is susceptible to heat and humidity stress, which can cause it to die. In locations where temperatures approach the lower limit of its cold tolerance, it is important to provide insulation to protect the plant.

Fertilizer

Timing is important when fertilizing Syringa reticulata subsp. pekinensis. Apply fertilizer in early spring and continue on a monthly schedule until early summer. Fertilizer supports the development of attractive blooms and supplies energy during both dormant and active growth periods.
