Simethis is a genus of plants in the family Asphodelaceae, subfamily Hemerocallidoideae. It contains only one known species, Simethis mattiazzii, commonly called the Kerry lily.It grows in dry places especially near the coast in Western Europe (Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy) and northern Africa (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia). Its common name is based on its occurrence at a few sites in County Kerry, Ireland.
Kerry lily has strong resistance to disease and is typically not vulnerable to illnesses. Still, it can be affected by pests and diseases present in its environment. When infections do occur, they are generally mild. Regarding maintenance, this plant is moderately demanding. It should be pruned regularly to preserve an attractive appearance and encourage healthy growth. Applying fertilizer can also help stimulate blooming. Kerry lily is appropriate for anyone with outdoor areas like a garden or patio and does not demand extensive gardening experience. It may need extra attention if cultivated indoors.
How to keep Simethis Mattiazzii.
Light
Kerry lily is native to habitats with dappled light, such as forest understories or rocky spots that provide natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can also tolerate full sun conditions.
Temperature
Kerry lily can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, although its distribution may still be restricted by different combinations of moisture and heat. It performs best in warm summer climates with sufficient rainfall or watering. Long periods of cloudy, rainy weather or extended high temperatures can raise the risk of the Kerry lily dying. In winter, protecting it from cold can increase the plant’s survival rate.
Fertilizer
Kerry lily requires regular fertilization to encourage flowering but is sensitive to too much. It needs small, frequent doses of fertilizer throughout its entire life, particularly during the peak period of active growth and when it's flowering. You will feed your Kerry lily until it stops blooming.
