ON THIS PLANT

Silene stenophylla is a species of flowering plant in the family Caryophyllaceae. Commonly called narrow-leafed campion, it is a species in the genus Silene. It grows in the Arctic tundra of far eastern Siberia and the mountains of northern Japan. Frozen samples, estimated via radiocarbon dating to be around 32,000 years old, were discovered in the same area as current living specimens and, in 2012, a team of scientists successfully regenerated a plant from the samples.

A note from PlantMom

Sea campion is fairly disease-resistant and typically does not suffer from illnesses. Still, it can be affected by pests and diseases present in its surroundings. Such infections are generally mild. In terms of care, the plant requires moderate maintenance. Regular pruning is needed to keep a neat appearance and encourage healthy growth. Fertilizing can also help promote flowering. Sea campion is suitable for anyone with an outdoor area, like a garden or patio, and does not demand extensive care experience. When grown indoors, however, it may need more attention.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Silene Stenophylla.

Light

Sea campion comes from bright, open habitats and does best in full sun. It can tolerate partial sun but favors direct sunlight for optimal growth. This plant, which may be annual or biennial, is known for its sun-loving nature.

Temperature

Sea campion can adjust to a wide range of temperatures, yet its distribution may still be restricted by particular combinations of moisture and heat. It grows best in warm summer climates with sufficient rainfall or irrigation. Extended periods of cloudy, rainy weather or prolonged high temperatures can raise the likelihood of Sea campion dying. In winter, adequate protection from cold can increase the plant's chances of survival.

Fertilizer

Sea campion requires regular fertilizing to encourage flowering but does not tolerate excessive amounts. It benefits from light, frequent applications of fertilizer throughout its life, especially during the peak of active growth and while it is flowering. You should continue feeding your Sea campion until it stops blooming.
