ON THIS PLANT

Setiechinopsis is a monotypic genus of cacti. Its only species, Setiechinopsis mirabilis, is native to Argentina.

A note from PlantMom

Flower of Prayer is generally resistant to disease and copes well with routine care without becoming sick easily. It can, however, be vulnerable to mealybugs; these pests may cause some damage but are typically not a serious problem. In terms of care, Flower of Prayer is drought-tolerant and rarely needs frequent watering. It can withstand long stretches without water and requires little fertilizer. That said, it is highly prone to root rot if kept in poor light and overwatered. Overall, Flower of Prayer is a good choice for people who prefer to spend less time on plant care, but its basic needs should still be understood and met. It is particularly well suited to those who are often away for long periods and may forget to water regularly.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Setiechinopsis Mirabilis.

Light

Native to arid regions, the Flower of Prayer thrives in full sun, its native habitat marked by intense sunlight and very little shade. It will also tolerate partial sun, giving it some adaptability in its growth.

Temperature

Flower of Prayer does best in warm conditions and needs higher temperatures during the growing season to support growth and metabolism. It prefers plenty of sunlight, proper moisture, and good air circulation. However, it can be damaged by very low temperatures and by overwatering. It’s also important to maintain balance and avoid excessively high temperatures and overly dry conditions.

Fertilizer

Flower of Prayer requires only light fertilizer applications once or twice a year during the growing season. Avoid fertilizing in winter and in summer when it is dormant. Reduce fertilizer for repotted plants and wait a couple of months after repotting before applying fertilizer. Fertilizing promotes healthy growth and encourages blooms.

Pot & Repot

Repot the Flower of Prayer in spring or summer, selecting a pot slightly larger than the current one that provides good drainage. Use a well-draining, sandy or gritty cactus mix. Handle the plant carefully to avoid its spikes. Let the cactus dry out before repotting to help prevent root rot. After repotting, wait a week before watering so the roots can heal.
