Sesamothamnus rivae is a species of flowering plant in the family Pedaliaceae. It is a caudiciform shrub or small tree native to eastern Africa, where it is found in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Tanzania. The plant is known for its swollen, water-storing trunk (pachycaul) and is adapted to seasonally dry tropical biomes.
Sesamothamnus rivae exhibits strong resistance to disease and is generally not susceptible to illnesses. With regard to care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs only minimal watering, and larger plants usually do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they finish blooming.
