Sarcococca confusa, the sweet box, is a species of flowering plant in the family Buxaceae, probably native to western China. It is an evergreen shrub growing to 2 m (7 ft) tall by 1 m (3 ft) broad, with glossy green ovate leaves and honey-scented white flowers in winter, followed by glossy black spherical fruits, 5 mm in diameter. It is a very adaptable and reliable shrub that is easily grown in many situations, including dense shade with very dry soil. It will however grow in full sun, even though the foliage appears to bleach a little. The soil should be kept damp if grown in sun or part shade. The shrub is midwinter flowering with a sweet scent. The small black berries are eaten by birds which disperse the seeds. The genus Sarcococca is widely distributed in southeast Asia from Afghanistan through the Himalaya to SE Tibet, Assam, Upper Burma and China, southwards in peninsula India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indochina, to Java and Sumatra, Taiwan and Luzon. This plant has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
Fragrant sarcococca is resistant to disease and is generally unlikely to suffer from illnesses. Care-wise, the plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs little watering, and larger specimens usually do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be trimmed after they have finished blooming. Fragrant sarcococca is appropriate for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand much prior gardening experience.
How to keep Sarcococca Confusa.
Light
Fragrant sarcococca is native to habitats like forest understories and rocky sites, where it occurs in natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can tolerate full sun or full shade, demonstrating its versatility and hardiness.
Water
Fragrant sarcococca, native to the understories of Asian forests, thrives in moist, humid environments. To keep your sarcococca healthy, water it every 2-3 weeks, ensuring the soil remains lightly moist. Being an evergreen, it requires careful watering during the growing season to sustain its lush foliage.
Temperature
Fragrant sarcococca adapts well to a range of climate conditions, whether in intense summer heat or cold winter weather. It does have an ideal temperature range for growth. If temperatures get excessively high, the plant is vulnerable to heat and humidity stress, which can cause it to die. In areas where temperatures near the lower limit of its cold tolerance, it is important to provide insulation to protect the plant.
Fertilizer
Timing is important when fertilizing Fragrant sarcococca. Apply fertilizer in early spring and continue monthly until early summer. The fertilizer encourages attractive blooms and supplies energy during both dormant periods and active growth.
Pruning
Fragrant sarcococca is an evergreen shrub known for its glossy leaves and pleasantly scented flowers. To keep the plant healthy and well-shaped, it is best to prune it from early to late winter. During this time, remove any dead wood, thin out the stems, and shape the shrub as needed. Pruning during this dormant period helps to minimize stress on the plant, promotes vigorous growth in the spring, and improves both its appearance and resistance to diseases.
