CARE GUIDE

How to keep Salvia Gesneriiflora.

Light

Big mexican scarlet sage originates from habitats like forest understories and rocky areas, where it grows in natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can adjust to full sun or full shade, showing its versatile and hardy nature.

Water

Big Mexican scarlet sage flourishes in well-balanced water conditions and prefers humid environments, although it can tolerate some drought. To maintain its health, it requires watering every 1-2 weeks, even when it remains evergreen during non-flowering periods. Consistent monitoring of its water intake is crucial throughout the year.

Temperature

Big mexican scarlet sage comes from tropical areas, where the weather is generally warm and humid. Consequently, it is well suited to high heat and humidity. It dislikes abrupt temperature changes and prefers steady conditions, so avoiding temperature swings indoors is important. It generally cannot tolerate cold and needs warmer temperatures to grow; if the surrounding temperature falls too low, growth may stop or the plant can die.

Fertilizer

The ideal time to fertilize a Big mexican scarlet sage is in early spring, when it is coming out of dormancy. This encourages overall growth and the development of flowers. Fertilizing improves the foliage, stems, and branches, and promotes flowers that are large, vivid, and long-lasting. It also helps move nutrients from the roots to the blooms and enhances the plant’s health and resistance to disease.

Pruning

The big Mexican scarlet sage is a fast-growing shrub known for its vibrant red flowers. To keep it in good shape, encourage more blooms, and improve air circulation, it's best to prune it in early spring. Be sure to remove any dead stems, and always sanitize your tools to prevent the spread of disease. This will help the plant stay healthy and produce more flowers.
