ON THIS PLANT

Salvia canariensis, the Canary Island sage, is an erect perennial shrub native to the Canary Islands. It can reach 2.0–2.3 m in height and 1.5 m width in a single season. The hastate leaves are pale green, and the stems and underside of the leaves are covered with long white hairs. The flowers range from pale purple to deep purple magenta.

A note from PlantMom

Canary Island sage has strong resistance to disease and is typically not susceptible to illnesses. Regarding care, this plant is fairly low maintenance. When grown outdoors, it needs only minimal watering, and larger specimens usually do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have finished blooming. Canary Island sage is suitable for anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or a deck, and does not demand extensive gardening experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Salvia Canariensis.

Light

Canary island sage is native to open habitats, including sunny meadows and forest edges, which offer abundant light. It flourishes in Full Sun but can also tolerate Partial Sun, adapting well to a range of sunlight conditions.

Temperature

Canary island sage shows good adaptability to temperature, tolerating higher heat and large temperature fluctuations. In hot weather, it is important to monitor watering and provide suitable shade to avoid sunburn. However, Canary island sage is relatively poorly tolerant of low temperatures. Although it can endure some cold, excessively low temperatures can result in frost damage.

Fertilizer

The timing of fertilization is important for Canary island sage. Begin fertilizing in early spring and continue on a monthly schedule until early summer. Fertilizer encourages lovely blooms and supplies energy during both dormant and active growth phases.
