ON THIS PLANT

Rubus coreanus, known as bokbunja (Korean: 복분자), Korean blackberry, or Korean bramble, is a species of raspberry native to Korea, Japan, and China. It produces edible berries (not true berries in the botanical sense) that can be fermented into bokbunja ju (Korean: 복분자주), a Korean fruit wine (although the majority of fruit commercially grown for producing this drink are actually Rubus occidentalis, native to North America). R. coreanus fruits are usually harvested between the May and July at peak harvest season. They can only be cultivated in a few areas in Korea, different to Rubus occidentalis, which can be cultivated widely across the country.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Rubus Coreanus.

Water

The Korean bramble thrives in moist soil, needing regular watering without becoming waterlogged. To maintain its preferred level of humidity and drought tolerance, it is best to water it twice a week. When grown outdoors, rainwater can supplement your irrigation efforts, promoting the healthy growth of the Korean bramble.

Pruning

The Korean bramble is a deciduous shrub known for its thorny stems and bright berries. To maintain its health and appearance, prune it in early spring to remove dead canes and shape the plant. This will improve airflow and sunlight penetration. Regular pruning encourages healthy growth and boosts fruit production, resulting in a more vigorous and productive plant.

The Korean bramble, scientifically known as Rubus coreanus, thrives best when it receives an appropriate balance of sunlight and shade. It has two main sunlight requirements: it needs full sun, which is defined as more than 6 hours of sunlight per day, and partial sun, which amounts to about 3-6 hours of sunlight. It's important to observe the movement of sunlight through your garden throughout the day to identify spots that provide this balance, ensuring the plants' optimum growth and happiness.
